Help me travel in UK

I need to travel from Gainsborough to Lyneham near Swindon. I can get a lift at the beginning to Retford but not sure about the Lyneham end.
Any decent routes? Coach seems impossible and trains seem to need a trip to London and an underground journey.

Cross country trains go direct from Sheffield to Bristol and Chippenham
  • What are you trying to achieve? It often takes longer to go via a "direct" route than going a longer way round.

Just want a simple journey, hopefully without London underground who always seem to be on strike or close stations when I go there!

I hope this is a simple journey avoiding London for you.
Retford to Sheffield (Northern Trains) (You can catch this train at Gainsborough Lea Road)
Sheffield to Cheltenham Spa (Cross Country Trains)
Cheltenham Spa to Swindon (Great Western)
Bus no 55 from Swindon to Lyneham. When you buy your train ticket, also buy a PlusBus supplement which will cover the bus journey.

This journey is available approximately hourly and the train part of it takes about 4h30m. You can enjoy watching the world go by.

The off-peak return fare for this journey is £95.70. (Off peak single £94.70 - that is how rail tickets are sometimes priced!) The fare via London is considerably more.

Anything you don't understand, just ask.

It just occurred to me to check the scope of the PlusBus area at Swindon. It looks like it doesn't go as far as Lyneham, so scratch that part of the plan, you'll just have to buy the ticket to Lyneham from the bus driver.

Bus 55 runs every 20 minutes from Swindon Bus Station, and the journey time to Lyneham is 44 minutes.
