Campervan from NI to Spain

Good morning

We are thinking of taking the campervan from NI to Spain for several weeks during summer/early autumn. Has anyone on this site ever done this before? If so, what is the most economical way of doing this? We also had contemplated hiring a campervan in Spain. Is this a better and cheaper option?

Any advice greatly appreciated

  • If you are on Facebook, there are lots of NI specific camping/caravanning groups with people who should know what's what.
Try camping NI non members group for a start, Northern Ireland campsite forum and caravanners and campers NI & ROI.
    Hope that helps!

  • We have taken our caravan from here to France, Belgium Holland and Luxembourg!! Great craic and worth the journey. Found it cheaper than hiring a static. Make it a long holiday with breaks on the way down. We went via Belfast cairnryan and then over to hull and then boat to Rotterdam. If going to Spain maybe best to get boat from the republic across. Great adventure and would certainly recommend it x
  • We have travelled to mainland Europe many times, and by many different routes.

If travelling via GB, I would suggest Belfast-Birkenhead - much less of a drive than going via Scotland, and usually about the same price, if not cheaper, for the daytime crossing.

Also, if travelling via GB, I definitely don't recommend the shorter channel crossings. I did it many years ago, and regretted it vowing never again! After driving for many hours in France, we still seemed to be going past all the other ferry ports. What you save in ferry fare, you can easily spend in fuel, tolls and food/drinks.

You can get a direct ferry to Spain from England with Brittany Ferries - I'm considering one of these routes myself this year.

Another recommended route is the Brittany Ferries route from Cork to Roscoff. Although Cork is further than Rosslare, the roads are now great, so I think the journey time is very similar. Once in France, if you're heading down to Spain, I think the journey from Roscoff is similar distance to the journey from Cherbourg.

Have travelled down the Atlantic coast from both and they're about the same, but we just got Irish Ferries from Rosslare to Roscoff rather than drive to Cork. Of course you can go Dublin to Cherbourg for less driving on this side.
