Advice for friend in RAF...

I have a friend in the RAF who has about £21k of debt, they don't own a house as they live on the base and rent... Does anyone know if they would be able to get an IVA? I heard that they wouldn't be able to go bankrupt, is that right?

You'd need to publish their SOA here for people to be able to help them properly. Your posting doesn't contain any detail on which to base a good response that will actually solve their problem and stop them repeating it.0

I'm not asking for proper help I was asking whether they can actually get an IVA if they are in the RAF as I'd heard they can't go bankrupt...
And another thing I don't want to say too much on here because I'm not discussing myself. Sorry maybe my original post wasn't clear, I guess what I'm asking is a hypothetical question, either a yes or no answer?!0 -
Ah... that's because I've never known anybody in the RAF or services ... so I guess people who do know people, given that prior knowledge, would have read your original posting correctly.
Apologies... and good luck on finding out the answer.
I just read it and thought "An IVA might not be right for them anyway ... they can probably clear their debts as £21k isn't 'all that' in the bigger scheme of things"0 -
I suggest that your friend contact the insolvency helpline. The have a specific department for the Forces. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

Hi Miss Muppet,
I have a friend in the forces and they're not allowed to go bankrupt, as we had this conversation when I went bankrupt. It's too much of a security risk apparently. Debts are seen as a bit taboo as well, something to do with being bribed/blackmailed!
Hope this helps.Bankrupt at 11.47 on 22/08/2007New debt free life begun 11.48 on 22/08/07 :j0 -
That's what i thought, but maybe it's changed since there's a site aimed at advising them. After all, once you're bankrupt, you have no debt so a bribe isn't as attractive as it would be if you were struggling.0

But your details would be published, which could be a security risk.. Maybe there is a way round that though...BCSC Member 70:j

Well my friend is actually my brother and he's posted in the DFW board and received loads and loads of advice and even managed to save loads of money already... he's given up the idea about the IVA so that's good.
Thanks for all the advice, was just worried about my little bro...
