The latter. They can get gummed up if the car burns oil and also if it floods with petrol.

Dont know about plugs. It is serviced at the requisite intervals but I cannot remember exactly what they did last time.

The fuel system is usually primed when the driver's door is opened.

An update - car into garage this morning, they ran diagnostics - no faults, checked engine including spark plugs in case they were dirty (they were in fact new a year ago). Could find absolutely nothing wrong with it, apart from needing a couple of front tyres, said was in perfect running order!

The computer says it's fine so it's fine! Probably still won't start though!

Yeah no faults with my car but intermittently it wouldn't start. Crank sensor resistance had gone high and it was faulty but worked most of the time.

No I did not I went to a respectable well established local garage which is also the registered MOT test centre locally.

Recently just as I was driving past National Tyres, my car developed a strange brakes/wheel/suspension noise so I decided to pull over and let them have a look.

The guy put it on his ramp and looked at the car and couldn't find anything. Then he walked over and looked at the rear springs and said that it looks like they have been fitted upside down! Hearing that I was absolutely gobsmacked as either he was very incompetent or he was dishonestly trying create work forhimself. I was very close to pulling him up on his mistake/dishonesty but then I thought maybe I should be a little grateful that he atleast put it on his ramp straight away and put my mind at rest somewhat.

I wouldn't be so sure, these guys aren't mechanics, they know how to do a hand full of simple tasks (change tyres, brakes, springs and shocks) beyond that their level of diagnostics skills is quite poor.
