Co-op Society shares

My mother-in-law paid for my wife's membership of the now defunct Cambridge & District Society back in 1965 by investing in a £1 share. We have records of share statements up tp 1990 when the Society was acquired by CRS. Does anyone know how to access the money in my wifes Co-op account?
A side question, what happens to a members share when they die? My mother was a member of the Co-op and I know her Share Number, but what happens to all those £1 shares?

My mother was in the same scheme (yes, Cambridge).
I know she's over the years tried to sort out the share thing.... and I think is now finally getting somewhere. I think she just hung onto her passbook rather than actually doing anything with it... oh - and asked the staff in her local co-op, who (obviously) had NO idea as they were just part-time cashiers there and knew nothing of any share scheme ....
Bottom line is: I think it is still going. So write to the co-op.
Sorry - I wasn't listening when my mum's been telling me about it all and what she did etc, but there might be some extra points she gets as a shareholder0 -
I assume the Co-op to write to would be the main CRS office in Rochdale?1

Think I can help you here as I work for the co-op. CRS merged with CWS back in 2001 and the head office is now based in Manchester (so don't write to Rochdale as neither CRS or our offices there exist anymore!). For details on your shares, write to: Shares Dept, Co-operative Group, New Century House, Manchester, M60 4ES. Quote your membership number and the original society you joined with.

Incidentally, they stopped paying interest on share accounts at the time of the merger. You could also phone the membership helpline, go into your local store and pick up a leaflet, its a freephone number and they should be able to help. I think its 0800 090 1456, cant remember off hand!0
