Jury service

Hi, can anyone tell me if jury service expenses are taxable?
My employer will pay my full salary while I am on jury service but they said they will make an adjustment to my pay later and I will have to make a claim for loss of earnings. Just trying to work out if I will be out of pocket or not.
Thanks.

Regardless of you being out of pocket or not you are still required to do jury service if you are summoned, your employer is being good to you paying you money anyway during this period but it seems it is impossible to let you know whether being out of pocket or not since we do not know length of service, travel distances and suchlike.

A solicitor would more than likely have a better clue than me ( I am not one ) but I cannot find anything in the official pages about paying tax on earnings and reclaiming them since you will not be working for the firm at the time?
A good person to ask advice off would be a court usher if they have a spare moment?
(Only way out of it is throwing yourself under a bus the day before, something I do not recommend..)"Don't blink. Blink and you're dead. They are fast. Faster than you can believe. Don't turn your back. Don't look away. And don't blink. Good Luck" - The Doctor.0 -
I don't think you'll be out of pocket.
Your employer will pay full pay.
You will make a claim for attending.
You will tell your employer (or I believe the court may do it for you) what you receive from the court.
They will deduct it from your next available salary payment.

It depends what you mean by 'expenses'
ie lunch (£5.71) and transport expenses are not taxed. They prefer you to get the bus or train (retain tickets), but will refund car parking fees and pay something like 30p per mile for car use. Just don't get taxis is the main advice I recall from the Usher.
Savvy Sue is correct re refunded usual employee earnings.
Only self-employed claims are usually queried as employee's usual earnings should be fairly certain.
You can't be paid twice if that was the suggestion ie there are no 'loss of earnings' for you to claim for if you are paid by your employer - and you do need to sign a form that goes to the HMCTS so best to be honest. Please be polite to OPs and remember this is a site for Claimants and Appellants to seek redress against their bank, ex-boss or retailer. If they wanted morality or the view of the IoD or Bank they'd ask them.0 -
There is a ceiling on loss of earnings and it's not very high. Check on linemake the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
Thank you, this makes sense.I don't think you'll be out of pocket.

FYI I have no problem doing Jury service and I know it is my public duty, I was just trying to work out what I need to do financially.:rotfl:0 -
BTW, I don't know how you are financially, but if things are tight, when the court pays your expenses please do not let them burn a hole in your pocket - your employer will be deducting them from your next wages!!!FYI I have no problem doing Jury service and I know it is my public duty, I was just trying to work out what I need to do financially.Signature removed for peace of mind0
