It is possible you have a pension somewhere that took contracted-out rebates, and you have lost track of it, perhaps if you moved house and forgot to notify the provider. My brother is in the process of trying to find his. His COPE is over £50 a week so there is a fairly big fund hopefully sitting somewhere!

Try ringing the HMRC contracting-out helpline on 0300 200 3500. Answer "contracting out" when the computer asks what you're calling about. You'll need your NI number too.
