Gammon in cola

I can not find anywhere to put this, and lots of kitchen stuff goes on in this forum so hopefully it's ok.

I had meant to put my gammon in the slow cooker around 12 on low but totally forgot until (now) I just put it in at 3. I haven't used it in about a year, but I'm so interested in the Gammon and Coke recipe I wanted to give it a try.

I put in a 1.3kg gammon joint and filled to the top of the gammon with coke. If it I put it on high does anyone know if it will be cooked by 8?

I also took the casing off the outside of the gammon which I've now read you don't do until after, will this affect the meal?

I'd of left it until tomorrow but I had defrosted it yesterday so didn't want to risk leaving it for another day. :( If all else fails it's gammon sandwiches for a few days. :)

I'm no expert on this but it seems like an awful lot of cola.

If it came up to simmering point fairly quickly on high it will probably be OK by 8.

This is possibly not very helpful but no-one else seems to have any better ideas.

If you are around and it is not done in the next half hour, try putting in the oven for the last hour.......probably about 180*.

  • Maybe chop the gammon into small pieces and put back in?

    Thanks for the replies!

I'm not in too much of a rush to eat it, if it's not eaten today we will have it tomorrow I just didn't want to waste it.

It does seem like a lot of cola but the recipe calls for 2L and I put in around half because it was full! Who knows?

It's my first time doing it, everyone I speak too seems to have had it/heard of it but never actually made it. I atleast hope it's tasty after this.

I'll check on it at 7 and I think maybe quarter it and put it on the oven for a final hour.
  • Is this Nigella's ? - Not sure how long it would take in a slow cooker, sorry. But know it's a great recipe as have always done it in a large pot with lid and have even had it in the oven. Delicious, hope it cooks well by 8.00pm for you all to have a lovely meal.

  • I cooked a gammon in cola at the weekend but only put in about half a glass of cola as I left it on overnight and didn't want it to flood over. It was lovely.

Bit late for OP but I always do gammon in coke in the slow cooker, so delicious and tender! Just pop joint in, pour coke half way up the slow cooker and switch on. I usually buy fairly small joints so the coke just comes to the top of the joint.
