I have been sticking all sorts of coins, mainly 20p-£1 into a large coin tin for some time and now it is pretty choc full.

Is there anywhere I can take this to count it up and get notes?

I used a coin star once in Tesco a few years ago, the machine took 7% or something off me, would rather avoid that again.

I could count it myself, but would prefer not to!

You can buy coin sorters/ counters, Likely to cost more than the 7%. There are other versions of coinstar, fairly sure they all take a cut.

A bank wont accept it unless sorted correctly in to specific amounts denoted on the bag. (not 100% on this, but fairly sure)

I always count them and split them, find the job quite therapeutic but then i used to work in a cash office and preferred counting coins by hand than weighing them. It shouldnt take that long. I once knocked over 5 floats with over £100 in change in each and managed to sort them all out in less than an hour (was scrambling under desks and other furniture too!)

DIY for free or pay someone else to.

You could buy things with it, just go in with a mixed bag of change and hand it over. Some might refuse, some wont.

We once had a customer pay in a similar way because he was miffed he couldnt get a refund on a custom product. Unfortunately for him, the boss sent me over and it made my day.

P.s ill count them if you send them to me?

if its mainly 20p -£1 it will be easy to count once you got a load of bags from bank......and if you cant be bothered then you will pay about £7 per £100

I might crack it open tonight with the fire on and see what I have, I'll be like Scrooge McDuck.

I have no concept of how much is in there!

Spadoosh you were soo close! Great guess haha.

I got an annoyingly close £99.54.

Not sure what to do with the dosh, may use it towards a camera lens, or I could take it to the bank and tuck it away / buy fuel for the car or something boring.

I have it sorted in separate sandwich bags, would a bank take it?

Dont want to annoy people in a queue though..

Danske have the counting machines in some branches. Can be deposited into your account with no commission.

  • Pop into a bank branch and ask for coin bags. If you have them in the proper bags, it'll make things much easier for the clerk.

Then sort it into the correct amounts per denomination. Don't mix any coins. If you can't make the full denomination, you'll have to bag them and write the proper amount on the outside, but the bank teller will recount them. (I'm not sure if they can refuse to accept if they're not in the full amount)

Why have UK banks not managed to get into the 20th century yet ? I used to deposit big bags of unsorted coins into a german bank in the 1980s. They set the machine to 0, chucked it into the hopper and away it went. It then wrapped the coins in paper, the way they were distributed in Germany. This was a small sub branch as well, not a major one.
