Am I a supervisor?

Hi,

I started my current job in November 2014. I'm the only person in the company that does the role. We have gradually got busier and busier to a point that in January 2016 the company employed two agency workers to assist me.

We got even busier in March 2016 and took on another two agency workers so now I had four people to monitor, watch over and check all of their work.

My manager has never said a word to me about being a supervisor but that's how I'm now seen. If there is ever a problem or the workload changes or basically anything at all people from other departments come to me when in essence my job title/description hasn't changed and is exactly the same as the agency workers.

Overseeing four people is quite a lot of extra responsibility. I haven't asked for it, its just the way things have gone. I don't mind it and I do quite enjoy it as I'm very organised naturally so I can handle it but at peak times it can get manic.

There's also a lot of responsibility in the sense that the vehicles that we are working on are each £330,000 so it all adds up and people are saying to me more and more that I should be paid as a supervisor.

I wanted people's opinions on this as I'm not sure whether to mention it to my manager or not. Last week we had four agency workers, this week just two but it will go up again soon

    Yes, I think so.

If it were me, I'd feel I was taking advantage of a member of staff if their role evolved to have a managerial component without an I.crease in remuneration.
  • You you have 1to1's with your manager? Best time to discuss it. But yes, you are currently cheap labor.

Do you set their priorities and performance targets? Do you handle their sickness/holiday requests? I wouldn't get too hung up on the word supervisor, unless that is a specific role/band in your company. Instead, focus on your job description (what you are paid to do) and put together a business case for what you are doing on top of that, and what you would like to happen, trying to factor is an much business benefit as possible (how you are succeeding in the role, how your direct reports are succeeding etc) and present that to your manager.

You could also provide external examples of similar roles (if they are a high salary).

Include how long you have been covering the higher level of responsibility, include the accountability level and how you've enjoyed the challenge, how you've stepped up without complaint and would now like to worth with management to align your salary level to the 'new' job level.

    Good luck!
