Finding MA job

Okay guys

Never worked in the mortgage industry. I worked in IT before. I have achieved my cemap qualification (must admit is was difficult) for a career change.

I've done some basic banking jobs recently.

I'm finding it hard to land in a mortgage advisor role due to lack of experience .

What will be your top tips for me to get my foot in the door ?

Cheers

  • I started out in the retail bank industry before going self-employed a couple of years ago.

That said, the banks generally like people to start out as a cashier and work their way through the roles so that may entail an initial step back plus I know some banks (Halifax) have been making redundancies in this area.

Starting out as self-employed/100% commission from day 1 is a bit risky without industry knowledge but if you can link up with a good firm and are confident in your people skills I have known people to make a success out of it.

An alternative would be starting in an estate agents however they're likely to want to see a sales background and be prepared for a more old school (read pushy) sales mentality.

    Good luck! :)

You might work to consider looking for an administrative role within a brokerage moving into the customer facing role as your experience builds.

The content of CeMap is probably under 10% of what you need to know to be an effective mortgage broker, so lots to learn.

  • Thanks so much guys. Well thankfully I've been given a chance to work for an equity release firm as an admin. Perhaps this might help me get my foot in the door.

In terms of going solo straight away I agree I think it maybe way too risky as I lack basic knowledge.

What's the most difficult part of being an MA?
  • You need a considerable amount of patience ;)

I would say coping with change.

It is not a job for the highly strung.
