Company Car on a Fixed term contract

Hi Everyone,

So myself and my current colleagues are currently having to re-apply to a certain extent our own job which is currently part-time using are own car as field sales staff to various locations in our areas. The new full time position, which is to replace our current contract which finishes this month, start in this new full-time role, but includes a company car. This is great to have a car that not ours and we don't have to worry about wear and tear on the miles that we have to do. The problem is, the contract is fixed until November, and a lot of us already have one, or two cars already in the household, which we have various variations of finance on to fund, we don't really want the company car, as logically we would want to get rid of one of the cars, to support the new company car, but as its fixed until November, we would then have to get a new car, with the possibility of not having a contract or job come December, so financing a new car may be difficult. Is there a way to reject the company car proposal as part of the job with some wonderful legal documentation?

Thanks in advance for any help!

You can always attempt to negotiate the conditions of any new role. Whether you succeed or not is another matter. It may be that the employer wants to make sure you're all driving 'decent' cars rather than old bangers, which they feel can be achieved by giving company cars, but I'd say you were in a strong position to argue that if your own cars have been OK until know, they should be OK going forward, at least until the positions are permanent.

If you're in a union, use them to negotiate.
