I have booked the £25 tickets and have thought about doing half bus then train to come back.

Interesting you mention the date, Mickey54, because we would be coming home the Thursday before Good Friday...

Virgin Trains seem to have £17 singles on that date at 10:51, 12:52 & 14:52 - change at Wolverhampton and Smethwick.

Thanks, Cornucopia - where are you looking because I can't find them! I booked the outgoing tickets through the virgin site.

    Edinburgh Waverley - Kidderminster on 20/4/17 @ 10

    Nothing more complicated than that.

Ah, we're leaving on the 11th and returning on the 13th.

    Ah, okay, misread the dates.

There are some cheap tickets on Transpennine Express between Edinburgh & Manchester. You might be able to add on something via Shrewsbury to them.

Alternatively, wait a couple of weeks and use a proper split ticketing app, like the MSE one.

I've been searching for trains to and from Edinburgh in April. (Going for 2 night break). Managed to find one going for £25 for the three of us! (2 adults and 1 child with railcard). Coming back, nothing for less than £200. Surely that's not right?! Can anyone advise how to find a cheaper fare? I looked at the bus but it'll take 9 hours which is a step too far.

That's danger money for the train driver.

I had another quick look and these options might be cheaper on that day...

    Edinburgh - Manchester/Manchester-Shrewsbury/Shrewsbury-Kidderminster

    or

    Edinburgh - Manchester/Manchester-Wolverhamption (National Express Coach)/Wolverhampton-Kidderminster
