How to make hooch

Any ideas? Of course I have no intention of doing so, because that would be illegal. Just curious of the process involved.

I don't think it is illegal to make spirit liquor, but it would be to sell it. And I dread to think what it would do to your guts. I stick to my home made liqueurs made with fruit, alcohol such as brandy or vodka, and a little sugar.

I'm sure if you Google it, you'll find the answer.

Do we get invited round for a party - with this hooch you have no intention of making - once you've made it.

You gotta have taste testers after all:rotfl::)

Hooch is home-distilled liquor and if you do decide to make it you should take care to ensure you are distilling the right thing to make your hooch.

Ethanol will get you drunk if drunk in sufficient quantity. Ether might kill you or make you blind. They both evaporate at similar temperatures and have pretty much the same chemical compositions.

If you are considering home distillation for a laugh then I strongly recommend that you buy a cheap bottle of gin from your local supermarket instead and get wrecked on that or best of all drink some nice tasting gin less often.

This reminds me of my school days...in the sixth form...a couple of lads turned up one morning with a large plastic container ( I think it might have been a catering sized container for oil?)...they proudly offered round their batch of home-made-booze-of-undefined-type.....

I was a 'good' girl, very quiet and not in with any of the popular crowd and at break-time when the dubious-liquid was passed around, I simply refused and made myself a coffee and no one pushed me to sample it...thankfully!

I don't think anyone there will forget how ill some of those sixth-formers were!....It started off as vaguely amusing, then a bit worrying...and finally it hit home just how idiotic they had been.

I fail to see the attraction in getting so drunk, but if that IS your idea of a good night OP, then buy cheap booze from the local supermarket...much cheaper, and much much safer.

'Domestic' stills have a nasty habit of going bang and taking whole buildings with them.

Get the wrong ingredients and you lose major bodily functions and suffer long term damage.

    Your choice...
    :hello:
  • As Tiddlywinks says I'd be very careful with home-made stills, 5 people died in an explosion in Lincolnshire a few years ago. I know it's not quite the same, but making home-made wine or beer might be better, you can buy kits to do that from Wilkos. It's not illegal as long as you're not selling it.

If you go to a local brewing shop thy may be able to help with adviceetc. I know it requires special sugar to ferment. We have one in the local market.

I'm more into sloe gin than moonshine.

  • This is a long but interesting documentary about an appalachian moonshiner:

If you are interested in making a spirit style drink, you can buy something called a Prohibition Kit, which uses high tolerance yeast to produce around 20% alcohol, no distillation required. The coconut one was a fair approximation to Malibu:

Your next best bet is to befriend a rural European, most countries have kept a distilling tradition, legal or not. Romanian lemon vodka and French homebrew calavados improved my student days no end

We make our own cider, but OH has a degree in chemistry and treats it as an extension of that- copious notes, a lot of sterilisation etc and a good excuse to buy a PH meter, hydrometer and all sorts of other gubbins beside.

The 'wild cider' we made this year is ermmm interesting and we're expecting those bottles to probably go pop. That's bad enough, never mind a whole still. The single bottle of cider last year that got totally overexcited made a hell of a mess- sticky broken glass for a wide radius.

There are plenty of homemade alcohol options with varying degrees of input/ ingredient purchase outlay without going for moonshine/ hooch

By the time you've read up and bought the relevant ingredients, you may as well forage for fruit, ferment that or mix with cheap gin/ vodka and sugar for a better, less possibly fatal result
