Do you have credit cards and how do you use them?

It’s the new year, and the time when most debt problems are at their worst. This week we want to focus on plastic, meaning credit (and store) cards, and are interested to know how you use them.

Which is closest to your credit card situation?

I had to say I mostly pay in full each month but actually have an interest free period running so it will be paid before time is up. Any spending on my other cards is paid in full every month.

Similar here. I have 3 cards, 2 with interest free periods. One is paid off in full, one is minimum only as it is building a slow stooze and the third is at 95%, still use for the cashback and pay back what I spend.

Which box do I tick ?

I answered that I pay in full every month because I do on any cards that charge interest. For the ones with 0% for 2 years I only pay minimum amount as there's no point paying off free money early.
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.
  • Interesting results so far - I used to be a debt counsellor and the charity I worked for found far more females were in debt, average amount of £35K - this was 9 years ago and nothing has changed.

We need education in schools about this - otherwise this problem is going to continue.

I feel that is far too simplistic. I never received any financial education but have always had a common sense approach to money and that is something that cannot be taught in school in this "must have it now" age.
  • Same as first 3 posters, I pay off the cards with interest, and have others that are interest free - I chose pay in full because I am not paying any interest, but this does illustrate that the poll is not very well written!

I only pay the minimum payment. It's 0% for another 18 months instead of repaying the money goes into premium bonds account. I'll transfer it to another 0% card nearer the end or sooner if I see a good bonus offer.
  • We only use credit cards on holiday so that we avoid paying fees on foreign transactions. We pay in full when we get back.
From day to day we don't use credit cards (apart from one that my husband uses for work expenses). We use cash or debit cards and live on the money we have, not the money we will have next month. So much easier to keep track of how much you have when there's no future bill to pay.
  • The question could be better - I rarely pay off in full at the moment because I have a few cards on 0% - I NEVER pay any interest, though!
    :j
  • Does anybody still use credit cards (or store cards) that charge interest?
    The question isn't exactly clear!
