Screws won't budge .......

Options
I have to get all the doors off and I'm sure some of the screws have been in since the house was built! 1886!!

Some of the screws just won't budge. I've scraped the paint off but just can't get any purchase on some of them.

Any ideas?? Anything legal will be considered at this stage :rotfl:

I'll be off line until late Sun so thanks in advance for any help with this.

You can knock them round with a hammer and nail punch or flat scew driver

try tightening them firstly, then unscrewing....this way you wont knacker the head on the screw
  • If all above don't work then a impact driver will sort the screws out you hit the end with a hammer.
Example from Screwfix can be obtained from any DIY Store.

  • Another option would be something like these, they go in your drill and you run it backwards to extract the screw.

final resort, is to drill out the head of the screw.
or just use a crow bar to prise off the hinges and make good afterwards.
sometimes you can make enough room to get a hacksaw blade to the screw body. then remove the rest with pliers/grips.
    Get some gorm.
  • Before you try to loosen or tighten the screws, put your screwdriver into the slot and give the screwdriver and decent whack with a hammer to help loosen the woods grip on the threads. Make sure the screwdriver is the right size and a good fit in the screw head.

To use those you first have to drill a hole down the centre of the screw/bolt. If you break one off in the hole, as regularly does with these, the are nigh on impossible to drill out.

    Buy a damaged screw remover:

I got one & it worked really well getting the old screws out of my doors.
  • Follow oooOOOooo advice ! also screws rust, Beg or Borrow a soldering iron hold it against the screw head a while, this will cause the screw to EXPAND and will make removal easier.

I would second the impact driver suggestion, make sure all the paint is removed from the screw slot (using a craft knife), then give it a good whack with a hammer. I would try this first before the screw heads get damaged.

The screw remover bits are only suitable for pozi drive heads, and I assume you have slot head screws as they are so old.
The bolt/screw removers with anti-clockwise threads that require a hole to be drilled are more suitable for larger bolts really and would not work too well with a door hinge screw.
