These are the best from my recent borrowings:
The Well and The Mine
"After she threw the baby in, nobody believed me for the longest time. But I kept hearing the splash."
So begins The Well and the Mine, a magnificent debut novel set in 1930s Alabama.
Roberta, a lonely thirty-four-year-old bibliophile, works at The Old and New Bookshop in England. When she finds a letter inside her centenarian grandmother’s battered old suitcase that hints at a dark secret, her understanding of her family’s history is completely upturned.
Interesting take on various themes.
The cover says it all really, synopsis-wise, but this was a good read and I'll be looking for her other book.
An 'ordinary' Baltimore family has to deal with the vulnerability of their ageing parents and the home that the family has occupied for many generations. There are some great comedic moments in this book, which offset the tragic events.“All shall be well, and all shall be well and all manner of thing shall be well.”0 -
Just finished this. First in a new series. Quite harrowing but a very well paced thriller. Worth a read.
I gave it 5 stars.Never put off till tomorrow what you can do today!
Cos if you do it today and like it...You can do it again tomorrow..

I must look for The Fire Child. The Ice Twins was the only English language book in my Thai hotel, when my kindle was playing up. I devoured it.
Read the Anne Tyler a while ago. .Member #14 of SKI-ers club

Hoping the library will have Ice Twins tomorrow.
Just making my wishlist for morning from all the recommendations on here.“All shall be well, and all shall be well and all manner of thing shall be well.”0 -
As I've been indulging in Jeffrey Deaver, I now have a stack of 'proper' books and just bought The Nightgale, kindle daily deal. It was recommended by DIL.
NB I'm not demeaning thrillers, but not good as one's total literary diet.Member #14 of SKI-ers club

I must confess that I do seem to read more psychological suspense/crime/thrillers than anything else lately. Hope my selections don't lower the tone on here! Just finished these:
These are books 1 and 2 respectively of a trilogy and I found them fascinating.
But my county library does not have the third volume in its catalogue - how annoying is that?!!
Which means I will have to start trawling the charity shops...“All shall be well, and all shall be well and all manner of thing shall be well.”0 -
Imperium was excellent. Although about Cicero and Ancient Rome, the politics were so like this day - could have been an allegory.
I've just finished Jodi Picot's Great Small Things - phew! Gripping, tense, her usual dilemma and good people involved in dangerous situations. Again very apposite.Member #14 of SKI-ers club

Just finished The Stranger in My Home by Adele Parks. Really good, interesting storyline about two babies accidentally swopped at birth. Well written and I really wasn't expecting the twist that the plot took. 9/100

I have just finished Mosquito by Roma Tearne. I loved the really descriptive language the author used. She made Sri Lanka come alive for me. This book is set at the time of the Civil War in Sri Lanka, but it is about abiding Love, keeping the faith and hope. I would give this book 9.5/100
