Benefits while on apprenticeship

Morning,

So the back story is I left school and went to college to do IT and business based things. Now I'm 27 I am looking to completely change what I know and have applied for an apprenticeship with BAE as an engineer.

Now, I have a mortgage, bills, house, a 7 month old daughter etc. I am hoping to find out if I get accepted to be an apprentice what benefits am I entitled to? I am currently on £20,400 and I know my wage will be dropping a huge amount of I do it, which scared me that I won't be able to afford to do it. My partner will be on around £6000 a year when she goes back to work from maternity, and that just won't cover everything we need.

I hope I have found the right forum. Any help or advice is appreciated.

Thanks for reading, Craig.

You'd need to apply for tax credits. Enter some figures into a benefits calculator for a fuller picture of what you may be entitled to.

If it is a higher apprenticeship you may be pleasantly surprised, I doubt the salary will be much lower than you're on now.

    Best of luck.

BAE Systems apprentices are well rewarded; higher level apprentices start their apprenticeship on around £18k, with a salary on completion in excess of £34k.

    Don’t be a can’t, be a can.
  • Not sure what level the apprenticeship is. I have just emailed them asking, so hopefully will receive a reply tomorrow.

    Thanks for the replies.

Craig don't get your hopes up with the apprenticeship as it is aimed at 16 -24 year olds due to the extra government funding BAE will get for taking on and completing an apprentice in their business. Google for benefits calculator on the Gov site to find out what you would get if successful.and what you should be claiming now.
