Council tax bill - request for previous years

Hello
I've managed to lose my council tax bills (paper copies) which cover the last 4 years. Would the council be legally required to provide me with paper copies? I phoned up on Friday and they said they couldn't provide past copies but they surely most store them in the system

I've encountered some difficulty and I will need to apply for social housing for my family. We need to prove that we have lived in the local area and from the council's website the main thing they look for a copy of a council tax bill.

Thanks

They have to provide you with one for the current period and will also provide one near the end of the current period for the next period.

They do not have to provide statements from previous years as they have done what they need to do by sending them to you in the first place. They can't then be held responsible if you misplace them or dispose of them.

What about bank statements, utility bills? If you have a driving licence that will have a date it was issued so that could work?

Something else worth considering is what is the local area? Same council area? If so, bank statements that show you are paying the same council for council tax might suffice.

I would suggest making a subject access request for all the data they hold about you. It will cost you £10

It should provide evidence of liability and payments which should be as good as copies of bills.

Usually it is not possible to produce a bill if there is nothing outstanding, so assuming you paid your bills on time it is not now possible to rebill you.

However you can ask for a screen shot for the relevant paid years.

I don't think there is any legal requirement to provide you with copies of the bill as they are not possible to produce and if we legally had to provide them it would be possible to print them.
