Make do, Mend and Minimise in 2017

Another week zipped by! Using up my stash of knitting wool by crocheting a big throw. Still working through the freezers though have been inspired by folk on here to do a proper inventory of them so I know what's really in them! And have been minimising my use of the c/h by wrapping myself up in my heated throw (wonderful invention). As I'm on my own it's only me that needs to be kept warm except when I have visitors and then I feel obliged to put it on for a couple of hours. Hope everyone is well and having a good Friday evening. :beer:
Ps I always want to put a 't" in the word ..crochet .. hope I'm right when I don't!

Making do with whats in freezer for as long as I can, want to get rid of this old inefficient freezer and get a new fridge freezer. Also want a plant container am looking into utilising an old bedside cabinet for this.

Mended a couple of jumpers with small holes. my sewing box as needed a small screw in hinge.

Minimised a bag of books to charity shop.

Afternoon all,

Doris has hit in Cornwall - really windy and lots of rain and then moments of bright sunshine! Bonkers!

You know what I said about getting a stash of monies and then, fustratingly it all goes on an essential ??????

well DS1 +GF have had to go back to Northampton as the place which said they could store their stuff for free changed their minds! (sigh) So that was £240 for both of them to travel up + £120 for man with van for 3 hours + money for storage unit (which they had saved!) Its buffer money gone again but at least (so long as they keep up payments for unit) their stuff is safe now - thank goodness a friend is storing their furniture so that makes it a smaller storage unit!

To be fair they say they will pay me back but at the moment I cant see when!

Make do: DS1 + GF are not sure when they will be back so im in an unusual conundrum - meal plan is up the swannee - and I have so much fresh food in to eat that I am not sure what to eat up first!!! Does anyone know if potato bakes, once frozen come out again OK? If so I can do one of them as potatoes are starting to look as if they are gonna go green soon!
Mend: my dear friend is comming over on Monday and for Christmas she gave me one of those lovely photo calendars with her doggie in (I often dog sit for her and I love the dear little woof). however, I had not put it up, because, where I wanted it to go it is a granite wall and you need special pins to put hooks in there. Anyway the MM&M spirit hit! I had a length of ribbon from a specialist chocolate that was given me, I threaded this through the hole in the calendar and the made a long loop and hung the calendar on the same hook as my kitchen clock (hook already in house when i moved in) but, because of the length of the ribbon - the calendar is below the clock - and very good it looks too! my friend will be pleased to see her gift in use!
Minimise: Packaging - someone gave me some hyacinths to plant - they came from L!dil with their own little china bowl etc - so have finally planted them this week and chucked into the recycling the packaging... :j (I know its a bit late but i think they will still grow!)
Am now off to tackle the box of paperwork I promised myself that I would get rid of this week!!
Rainbow - the salt paste and baking soda does work (hangs head in shame) my oven really does need doing but ..... oh look there's another raindrop - how unusual.... :rotfl:

LynP, I parboil potatoes for about 5 mins before slicing for boulangere for the freezer, so I reckon you'll be fine with potato bake - just first bake for less than usual

Hmm - I've taken on a challenge on the minimising front - couldn't resist a large bag of vintage saris at the market this morning, which was a bit of a bargain. I thought there were probably 9 or 10, but there were 17 in all... that's a LOT of fabric; about 102 yards in all! Some were perfectly OK and are already on my stall; others need a bit of attention to be presentable, but some are beyond use "as is" and are already in the process of being dismantled. The trims alone are very usable/saleable and much of the fabric is salvageable & can be sold or used in DD2's dance costumes. I will need to keep on top of this though; the last thing we need is acres of vintage fabric, however lovely, spilling out all over our living space!

Triumph! My dd, who is 8, made vegetable soup all by herself! Sharp knife, fire, heavy pan, the lot! And it was tasty, too! She minimized a bendy leek, two carrots and some celery I was wondering what to do with.

Minimising : I had to throw away a bag of precut endives (the frilly green leaved salad type stuff), because it looked still fine, it smelled and tasted off.

Good morning chums I had a good day yesterday I minimised a packet of carrots into two litres of carrot and coriander soup.Then freezer dived for dinner last night and found a bacon wrapped chicken breast, and a bag of cauliflower and mashed potatoes .These I added to a dozen brussel sprouts that were languishing at the back of the fridge .Very tasty as I had also found a small slice of garlic flavoured yarg in the freezer which I defrosted and crumbled over the veg the a quick blast in the m'wave to melt it just before eating ,delicious .I think I had bought the yarg around December and stuck in at the bottom of the freezer out of the way.I know it was y/s from dobbies and only cost me 45p and there is enough left to go into tomorrows lunch salad
I also peeled and cooked five past their best eating apples and make a thick gloopy custard to go on top So used them up rather then bin them.
Mended a couple of hooks in the kitchen that had come loose from the wall just banged a raw-plug in then screwed the hooks back in sorted
So quite a productive day yesterday .

Morning Chums - Oooh Thriftwizard I have sari envy with all that beautiful fabric waiting for upcycling
Making do with a YS joint of pork from the freezer - just debating whether to slow cook or roast it.
Mending a friend's fleece jacket for her and going to minimise another friends hair for her - she cuts it herself (and does a good job) but just needs the neck tidying.
Need to wash my hair before I pick up DS1 o go to the club for a couple of hours.

Hi, I don't know if this is the right thread but.....

My step-daughter has asked me to crochet a mermaid blanket for my 7 yr old granddaughter.

Does anyone know the cheapest place to get soft chunky wool from? I will need about 600g of it.
