HMRC self assesment nightmare...

Options
Hi ladies , gents

Sorry I couldnt seem to post in citizens advice so I didn't know where to post but . . .

in mid 2016 I have started to get letters from the hmrc saying that I owe tax from previous years and that I am going to face penalties. in 2012 my employer at the time has claimed some sort of tax relif twice and only paid tax on one part and apparently that made me £115 short on my 2012 - 2013 tax bill . the HMRC then put me into a self assessment program which I have been in since so for the last 4 years , I now have massive fines of upto around £5000 and have only found out about this late payment 3 years or so later ? not good .

I have always been in employment and have never had a clue about any of this and to be honest I am completely lost with it all and am pretty shocked all of this has been happening and I hadn't a clue.

I have never had a debt , missed a phone or car payment or anything in my life and now I'm to be fined thousands for an employer and accountant incorrectly paying my tax years ago , what can I do ? where do I start ? many thanks for any advice .

Have you contacted HMRC about this ?

If so what did they say ?

Personally I would ask my MP to help with this.
  • I have spoken to the hmrc many times this year about why I am getting these letters when I first found out and what the debt is for ect when It was all still very new and confusing .

the latest from this week is that I need to send off self assesments on my earnings , tax paid , employers names ect from 2012 - 2015 so they can calculate my bill and then I can either pay or go against the debt . all the self assessment forms have been sent I'm now going to be awaiting an answer .

I haven't got any letters yet but going off the pattern of previous years could I possibly be looking at fines for 2015 - 2017 too as they would also be classed as late as I didn't know I was in a self assessment program ?

    Try not to panic.

If, you do owe the money, they are obliged to accept an affordable payment plan, just as a court would if it ever got to a legal stage.

  • So do you think it is most likely that i will have a possible £4 - 5000 debt incoming or has it been known that you can somehow get the HMRC to reconsider the debt ?

Would it be best to get intouch with an accountant to look into this one they get back to me so they can send letters on my behalf for a better chance ? Thanks .

Not the same as your situation but if it does turn out you owe them £5000, we had a huge overpayment of tax credits due to HMRC inputting my partners salary incorrectly. They agreed that I could clearly be heard on the call telling them the correct amount but they still held full blame on me. We are repaying them £40 a month, I will be 100 by the time I pay it off but it's all I can afford and they accepted this.
Debt at LBM [strike]£17,544[/strike] £5700
    :TOver £14,000 PAID OFF :T

2020 the year of less - Less debt, less waste, less spending, less stuff, less stress!
  • Thats good that it could be as little as 40 a month then but still fustrating that they can actually charge people these rediculous amounts :o ill repost when i get an answer in a few weeks :)
