Why have prescription sunglasses got so expensive?

I've had my regular eye test and my prescription has changed slightly.

For anyone who understands these things, it's now:

R -2.50 +1.25 22.0
L -2.00 +1.25 160.0

I need to wear glasses for driving, so I'm now on the hunt for prescription sunglasses. Normal glasses were fine, just shy of £12 from Specky Four Eyes.

Prescription sunglasses, on the other hand, seem to be extremely expensive everywhere. My last pair cost less than £30 with a small voucher taken off, but struggling to get less than £65 or so now.

Any suggestions? Generic sunglasses, ideally polarised, prescription as above, no other tints/fancy stuff or brand names needed!

I just stick a pair of ordinary sunglasses on over the top of my prescription glasses

You can buy special ones that fit better but any oversized ones do me just fine
  • You can ask the optician to either dip your "old" glasses into sunglass solution if the prescription hasn't changed much, or purchase a cheap pair of glasses and ask them to tint them in the solution for you. They should be able to do it instore.

Its commonly done in labs. I wear safety glasses over my prescription glasses rather than buying specifically, safety glasses with prescription lens.
