Vertical hand grip?

You can mount some bar ends further in on the handlebars, you'd just need to take the grips, brakes and shifters off to slide them right in. Or as Dave has suggested some tri or aero bars might do what you want although I haven't looked into them personally.

If the bars are too wide, you can cut an inch or so off the end with a hacksaw and mount the bar ends there. It might be possible to mount the bar ends inboard of the grips and levers, although that would need a bit of juggling.

I noticed a bike with bar ends within the grips beside mine in the bike shed today, is this the sort of thing you're wanting?

Thats exactly the thing, and in that location on the bar.

I have looked again at my handlebars and if I trim the grips then I should bet able to fit them there, and then glue the grips back.
