That falls to unsatisfactory management, I'd bet it was a poor dept to work in.
You would be asbolutely correct in that assessment. There were a few people in the department who got away with murder (figuratively speaking of course). They could wander in late, spend half the day talking or on the internet and not a word said.0 -
OP - You should have got a job in the public sector. The pay is nowhere near as good as in the private sector but leave allocation tends to be fairer and, if you didn't know, pensions tend to be better too.0

Makes me so glad I've always worked in a place that has a shutdown from a few days before Christmas to just after new year. The amount of people I know who are stressed out year in year out because they can't get Christmas off is phenomenal.
This is the problem with today's 24/7, 365-days-a-year society; everywhere is (almost) always open, and for this to happen, someone has to be there all the time. When I was a child/youth in the 70's and 80's; 90% of everyone I knew had Christmas shutdown. I can count on the fingers of one hand, the amount of people I know who get it now.
I sympathise with you OP, but have no advice, other than don't even bother booking the time off, just ring in sick, or change jobs. Management ALWAYS have their favourites, and if you're not one of them, you're screwed, because they will always let their faves and mates have whatever time they want off, whilst others are left behind with the scraps and breadcrumbs of the holiday leave.
One woman who works with my friend at a popular chain eatery claims she can't work after 3pm, or at weekends because she has to look after her grandchild. And here's the wacky thing; her manager adheres to her requests, mostly because they're mates. The grandchild is not even her responsibility; she is literally just babysitting her!
The managers and their mates have the pick of the easy shifts, they hardly work weekends, and they make sure their mates and themselves have the best holidays. This is so in most companies.Proud to have lost over 3 stone (45 pounds,) in the past year! :j Now a size 14!

At my last job I asked months in advance for my mums birthday off and got told no, in fact lost around half my years allowance as they only allowed so much time off for each employee in each quarter and told me there was no more allowed so outright told me I lost my allowance.
They also refused time off over holiday periods.
Illegal I guess but employees never got anywhere when complaining.0 -
It's the "but xyz has got children" justification that really annoys me. People make the choice to have children but not necessarily the choice not to. That justification is just rubbing salt into the wounds for those in the second category.0

Not any more. We used to have a wall chart where people wrote down their requests and managers would look at previous years before decidingManxman_in_exile wrote: »OP - You should have got a job in the public sector. Now we have a computerised system administered by the charge nurses - most of them look after themselves and their mates and make no effort to be fair
it's particularly annoying when the holidays are on the weekend , then the same people that are off every year will work the bank holiday days so thye get paid as much as those of us who've had to drag ourselves in0
