Too much tax?

Your tax to date is spot on. There does seem to be a small difference between the monthly tax figure you quote and the one I would expect to see but there are several possible explanations for this. Would need more details to check this but it is not going to alter what you have paid.
Tax and national insurance are calculated by giving you a certain figure which has nothing deducted from it then taking 20% tax and 12% national insurance (similar for student loan but cannot remember the percentage off hand) These allowances are all used up by you basic pay so anything extra has the 20% tax 12% NI and ??% student loan taken from it. This makes it look like you have paid to much tax NI SL when in fact you have not.0 -
Just to give a bit more detail.
You have gross to date of £19396.12 and tax to date of £2227.80.
£19396.12 at month 9 has £8256.87 tax free allowance so tax is due on £11139.25 You ignore the .25 so 20% of £11139 is £2227.80
So tax to date is spot on assuming the tax code of 1100L is correct.
The curious part is that as I said the tax figure of £557.40 does not quite fit in. If we look at this in isolation we have gross of £3615.50 with a tax allowance of £917.43 to give tax due on £2698.07 and tax on £2698 would be £539.60 so your tax looked at like this is £17.80 over the expected figure.
As I said there are possible reasons for this the most likely is that your tax code has been slightly reduced so could be worth checking if you are on the correct tax code. 1100L is everyones starting point but you could be entitled to a bit extra eg washing a uniform or supplying your own tools.0 -
Hi,
is the real question, 'how much tax did I pay on my bonus'?
If so, just compare tax paid on previous payslips, for an idea.0 -
