Want my grey hair back on the cheap!

I took the plunge recently and dyed my greying hair back to brown (which it hadn't been for years - I'm 37 & have been going grey for years). I used L'Oreal Excellence permanent colour. It was a nasty stinky nightmare to apply but looked ok for a fortnight.
Now the grey is growing back in and I am going to look like a badger soon, and I've decided I don't want to be a slave to the hair dye every few weeks. Costs too much and I can't be bothered! Anyway, can I get rid of the hair dye? Some has come out with washing already. Is there a fierce shampoo which will strip a bit more out? Or can a hairdresser apply something? Not much cash to spare at the moment for this kind of thing.
Looking forward to any advice...!

afer dying my hair for many years I struggled to get my original colour back (whatever that is now!!! ). Be careful about the shop bought "colour removers", they may end up leaving your hair an orange colour with the consistency of cotton wool!
I used this advice from another site and it really helped.
Colouring your hair opens the cuticle and allows the colour to penetrate the shaft, so there is no easy solution to getting the hair back to normal once this process has taken place. My best advice for you is use a clarifying shampoo in your hair every day (I know that superdrug do a nice version, own make and quite cheap). Once a week leave it on while you are home for about an hour (pref. with heat for at least a half an hour). These shampoos have a high ph level allowing the cuticle to open and release some of the colour out. The shampoo can tend to leave hair a little dry, so you'll want to use a hydrating conditioner to keep it healthy.
It won't completely remove the colour, for this you'll need to consult a salon for their expert advice, but with me, it faded the colour enough to not leave "roots" showing
 Hope this helps
