Nytol and the Like - Any Good?

I hate taking even parecetamol when I have a headache, so I'm not particularly looking to use this long term or at all, but are sleeping potions any good?

Had some Night Nurse last night as I have a cold. That really knocks me out and I've always had good excellent sleep when taking it so have been thinking about Nytol for those times when I simply can't sleep but really need to.

Like any drug response varies. All over the counter sleep remedies are first generation sedating antihistamines and I find although they make me sleep, I also feel sleepy most of the next day as well.

The most effective I've found for occasional use is marketed as Kirkland Sleep Aid and contains doxylamine succinate, an antihistime not widely used in the UK but common in the US. You can buy them on ebay.

I use Nytol particularly when sleeping somewhere strange just for the odd night until I settle IYKWIM.

Although I find it effective for such short term use, be aware that it does make you feel somewhat dopey the next day and makes the mouth and throat feel very dry. At least that's in my experience.

Superdrug do an own brand which I think is called Sleep Aid which is similar but cheaper.

I use Nytol in hotels and it works for me. I don't feel dopey the next day.

Perhaps try it one night when you don't have anything vital to do next day?

When unable to sleep because of stress, I found that yoga breathing helps (can be done while lying down), as it relaxes you.

I occasionally take phenergan, which is an OTC anti histamine but also can be used as a sleep aid. This works for me and doesn't make me too sleepy the next day
  • I work nights and alongside all my colleagues use Nytol, works a treat.
Only use it when working as it can become less effective.
I have had no problems with it.

As per the original post above, I use Phenergan too occasionally , usually have 2 or 3, excellent and no after effects
  • Consult doctor or do some yoga for that.

There's Nytol standard and Nytol Herbal. You would suggest trying the herbal one first. Also, Nytol being a brand name, they cost a lot more than their equivalent supermarket. Tesco herbal sleeping remedy is very much the same.
