Tax code - mid year job change

Hi All
Hope someone can help. I started a new job in October, taking a significant pay cut so that I've moved from the 40% tax bracket to the 20% bracket. I had a letter from HMRC giving with my tax code as BR. I understand that BR is often used if you have a second job and was wondering if that's correct or whether there's likely to be a change when my P45 is processed (I've handed it in however job is with the NHS and the whole HR process from interview to starting the job has been exceptionally slow so I'm not sure if it's been actioned yet). My partner earns approx £1000 per year more than i now do but seems to be taking home significantly more each month in his
take home pay.
Thanks in advance.
