Declining a contract due to agency

I was offered a new contract which in itself was a good opportunity, however the agency it's through (and who will be paying me each week) have been hopeless - pushing start dates early, losing important documents and blaming Royal Mail, not answering phones/replying to emails etc which has led me to turn down the job.
I have no direct contact with the company I'd be working for, do I tell the guy at the agency the reasons why I'm not taking the job, or just say I've decided to decline?

I would just say you've decided to decline - after all your comments would be directly critical of the agency the guy works for, and there's no point creating discord unless you have to.
I guess he will then ask if you're still available for other work, so say no not at the moment.
You might find the agency improves over time - could just be a bad patch involving lack of staff or stupid staff.0 -
Complaints about agency guys don't go far - you wouldn't gain anything from it. Especially if very mass market job.
It's worse starting somewhere and then hearing the truth so if you've had a lucky escape - it's priceless.0 -
The biggest issues I have are with my contact, and it's him I need to notify that I'm not taking the job.
I have no intention about complaining, it was just whether to be honest about my reasons or not.
I've kept it brief and just said I'm not taking it, not given any reasons why. Recruitment staff move from agency to agency so I reckoned I wouldn't be doing my career any favours by being honest.Feb 2024:

I think you did the right thing.
There are some intermediaries and agencies who are so flaky I hate working with them, and in some cases dealing with the intermediary becomes the hardest and most stressful part of the whole job.0
