Ideally iPhone 6 or will consider iPhone SE. I worry about buying on gumtree where it might not have guaranty or stop working or does not work after. If tips appreciated. Ideally no contract.

Any self-respecting 12-year old will lose or break their phone within six months, so set your budget accordingly.
I did once manage to get an iPhone 5C, complete with manufacturer's warranty, for a good price on Ebay. Sadly the warranty did not help when it was stolen within Angkor Wat in Cambodia! The replacement, again for a good price, was from a flea market in Thailand. Before paying I verified from the serial number that it was also under warranty.0 -
The concerns are aren't surprising but an Apple Genius actually recommended buying iPhones on Gumtree which confused me. He said he'd bought a number there (for himself and friends and family) and never had a problem. A few weeks after that I changed my phone and sold my iPhone there - I'd never used Gumtree before. About a month later I received an email from the guy who'd bought it to say thanks for the great iPhone - it was immaculate and I was quite pleased to get the email.
Prior to that I'd bought an iPhone a couple of weeks earlier on eBay. It was from one of the huge sellers with '000,000's of positive feedback. They failed to ship it for 3 weeks and then when it arrived it was in less than the perfect condition they'd stated and the battery wasn't much use. They did accept the return but it took another 2 weeks to get the money back.

I've got an iPhone SE and my 11 year old has an iphone 5s on talkmobile for £17-50 a month, the 5s is more than adequate for his needs so I wouldn't bother getting anything more than that - id now hae for £13-50 a month https://www.idmobile.co.uk/shop/pay-monthly/apple-iphone-5s?source=aw&awc=6366_1482311562_66c35321d2badce98e1e36850929ace9&utm_source=Mobiles4everyone%20Ltd&utm_medium=AWIN&utm_campaign=27684):eek::eek: LBM 11/05/2010 - WE DID IT - DMP of £62000 paid off in 7 years:jDFD April20170

Another option on the iPhone 5s is http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/brand-new-iphone-5s-16gb-for-153-99-with-o2-refresh-2581329 - Total cost of £153.990

Note that there is a tool on the Apple website that enable you to type in the serial number of an iPhone and see whether it would be covered by guarantee.0

I've used Music Magpie to buy iPhones for work before. I got an iPhone 5C for £90, had a few scratches on it, but they grade based on quality. The one I originally wanted didn't pass quality control (good sign they don't sell stolen/crap phones), so they refunded me the money and I ordered another one. It also comes with a year's warranty.
I've bought 2 phones off of their for work now and would recommend it. You can spend a bit more on a better quality phone and you can chose your network or an unlocked phone.0
