Further steps notice out of blue

Hello
I am here in London visiting my mother and preparing for Christmas when my flatmate sent me very disturbing email with attached scan of a document dated 9 Dec from London Collection and Compliance Centre titled "Further steps notice" saying I have failed to pay as directed and they are going to take steps against me.
Now the crux of the matter is that I am not aware of any payment issued against me, no parking tickets, was never stopped by the police or didn't notice any flash behind me while speeding, have no other ideas apart from charges involving driving.
Also the letter misspelled my first name, putting "o" instead of "a" but they got my birth date and my address right, I am very disturbed.
From what I understand such letter means, is that my alleged lack of payment has been dealt with by the court, my question would be is it possible for such matter to rise to this level without my presence since last I was home around 23rd October? That means assuming that every communication by letter has been lost by royal mail because my flatmate has looked through all my mail and found nothing connected to this matter.
At this point, given no earlier communication and misspelled name I suspect the letter is bogus, but what if its not and bailiff do knock on my door.
Please help, advise if I should call/email/write London Collection? Is it possible to appeal this letter based on no earlier communication? How can I find out what was the original matter that led to the court case? How to avoid dealing with bailiff cos I can't imagine them buying story like "it's not me"
I'll be monitoring this thread through Monday until it's last time to call London Ccollection
Thank you

I would give them a ring and find out what it's all about, is there a reference number to quote on the letter ?

I've never heard of them, but then I live in Yorkshire, someone who lives in the London area may of encountered them before.

May be a good idea to check your credit report, see if a CCJ has been registered.

    Hi

As far as I’m aware LCCC collect magistrates court fines. You should certainly have had prior to notification of any fines issued against you though.

Give them a call as sourcrates suggests to clarify what it’s regarding. If they can’t give you details of the actual fine check Trust Online to confirm you do actually have a fine, and then contact the relevant court for more details. In fact, it's worth checking Trust Online anyway. It costs £4.

  • Got home from work on Friday (don't these type of things always tend to arrive on a Friday!) to find a Further Steps Notice.

I then googled to find they often relate to TFL fines but I had received no earlier correspondence about anything. I found myself checking DVLA in case I suddenly had points on my licence but nothing.

I was suspicious because the letter only showed my first and last names - no middle names - but my address was right and my date of birth was right.

I phoned the London Collection and Compliance Centre this morning, let them know I knew nothing about this and was asked if I had ever lived at an address in North West London. My answer was no.

Long story short, somebody in the Courts has tried to be "smart" and that there is another individual with the same first/last names and date of birth at an address in NW9 and they must have thought that I was that person and had moved!

Considering the amount of information out there now about people/properties/full names/dates of buying and selling homes then what on earth is going on that they can just "assume" and right a letter out of the blue requesting, in my case, £476.50.

I asked if I would receive a letter in the post confirming the mistake and the answer was "no, and apologies, but I will update the systems".

Thought I would post this as I am sure many other people will be in a similar position not having a clue what the letter is about and spending hours/days with it on their minds. Rest assured the Court clearly makes mistakes, and very dangerous assumptions!! Not good!!
