Diary of a wimpy mum

I have been on a mission to pay my mortgage off early in order to have some real choices in life. I work 3 days a week in a job that I used to love, but after several rounds of redundancies and every year a new turn around of staff, I have begun to despair of work. The office politics that I don't quite get. The pettiness of it all. The whole point of becoming mortgage free is so that I can become a stay at home mum to my children, a better wife to my husband and to finally do things in life that are exciting and new. However, after several years of overpayments and a new and more simplistic view of life where the best things in life really are free, I am now in a position where I only owe £70.

And yet I am scared to take the leap and leave a job that is eating away at my confidence.
I am fearful of the unknown.
So....Im hoping that starting a diary will help me to begin a new journey in the new year and stop me being such a wimp.

    Hello smother of 2

I don't think you are a wimp! Congrats on getting the mortgage gone ( or almost!). I stayed in a job too long and it made me physically ill. It was only once I recovered that I looked for something else. I'm in a new job ( oddly for more money, though that wasn't the plan!) less stress, less commuting, better work/life balance. As I'm earning more I am saving/investing plenty in case my situation changes again. Fir now though, the job move was the best thing I could have done. I would like to work more for myself in the mid-term, but for now I am happy doing what I do, stashing a bit of cash for a rainy day.

When I became very ill I found there were lots of people in similar positions to me. And lots in similar positions to you too.

I will subscribe and cheer you on from the sidelines!

  • :):)Thanks for the support Bexster. My final payment will be made in January, which means we will have paid the mortgage off 8 years early. The whole point of being mortgage free is that it gives us choices, so that we can leave an unsatisfactory job and do something different. I have had a few health issues over the last few years which hasn't been helped by being in a negative environment at work.
The idea of not working for a while means I can get my health back on track, support my parents more, as they both have disabiities, and spend more quality time with my children. And have the opportunity to do something completely different with my day , perhaps volunteering....

But first I need to write my resignation letter.:):)
  • Hi,
Oh wow! Congratulations on being almost mortgage free! You definitely need to leave that job and being mortgage free will give you the power to do so. You can then do something else if you want to.
Do they suspect that you will leave or have you kept it a big secret?
  • I had a strange encounter today that has left me feeling a bit upset. A friend of mine has recently extended her house and increased her mortgage, she asked how I had managed to become mortgage free on a relatively low wage, I gave her a quick explanation of how as a family, we don't buy things that are not needed and understand the difference between wants and needs, cooking from scratch, etc. My lifestyle was then criticised and I was accused of being mean. I don't feel that we have an unplesant lifestyle, my kids have everything they need, more importantly now the mortgage is almost non existant, they will have a happier mum with more time for them. Anyway...this has left me questioning myself a bit, so I thought I would focus on some goals.
Now that 2016 is nearly at an end, I have been thinking of the things I want to achieve in 2017.

    1. Resign from my job
    2. Start up running again
    3. Decorate 2 rooms
    4. Volunteer for a few hours a week
Just need to make this happen now...
  • Please don't give another thought to what your friend says. You shouldn't feel criticised for wanting to give your family security. We all have different priorities and reasons for that. Be proud of what you are doing - you don't need to justify it to anyone 😀

Definitely don't feel that you are mean or stress about it. This person hasn't paid off their mortgage so is just jealous about what you have achieved so quickly. Be proud of your achievements and your lifestyle.
Anything I say in no way constitutes financial advice and anything you do is your own decision.

    Agree with this 100%.
    Be proud indeed :)

Get thatn letter written & start looking for some volunteering openings. Then you can maybe find something that you really enjoy :)

  • I finally did it today!
I paid the last bit of my mortgage last month and with lots of hesitation, I finally finished work today. This is the first time in my life that I have been without a job and I do feel somewhat scared. Sometimes in life, you have to take a leap and hope the universe catches you!
Money may be a little tighter that usual, but with no mortgage to worry about.....phew!
The aim now is to get my health on track and to hopefully build some confidence so I don't feel like a wimpy mum anymore....
