Companies that don't 'do anything'

Hello. Question....My son's mother is a company director but pays no maintenance...the CMS stated she is 'kept' by her husband. She has been the director by herself or with others, of companies that don't seem to have 'done anything'...they exist on the web only in the Companies House website or in business listings, no actual information anywhere, no accounts lodged. The last company she had involvement with was scheduled for liquidation but this was resisted twice. I can't imagine why. Can anyone suggest why anyone would start companies which don't seem to do anything as I find it inconceivable that any company nowadays wouldn't have some kind of website, or web presence? (especially when the companies are meant to be IT-type)

    Does it matter?

People start companies for hundreds of reasons, all you need is her tax return.

What are some of the 100s of reasons? I can only think of one basic reason, to earn an income, and as she claims to have none, why bother starting companies? Think I know of 5.

I was simply puzzled by one of the companies that she had with a couple of other people...appointed as a Director in the May, terminated directorship in the August, appointed again the following January, terminated 2 weeks later and appointed again the same day.
    Just seemed unusual.

To hold assets? To hold Intellectual property? To get a Costco card? I mean it's really not relevant.

The CMS will look at her p60, which will show an income of zero.
