Direct Earnings Attachment (DEA) from DWP

Hi there,
Thought this might be the place to ask!
I was underpaid last month by a considerable amount (right before Christmas!) for seemingly no reason. As it turned out I had owed the DWP around £38 from many years ago and they had set up a DEA with my employer.
This would be fine, except they did not deduct £38 from my salary, rather they took a larger amount (11% fixed) that was not so fine.
I wonder does anyone know if the excess can be reclaimed or if this is now lost because I didn't act on time? Could really be doing with it back.
Many thanks!
