in Cutting tax
My DD has a wee 9 hour post and the last two weeks they have taken tax off her using tax code BR . She is only earning 40-50 pounds a week so will never come anywhere near having to pay tax !
How does she get this back - told her to speak to her work (largish chainstore) - but she is a bit shy so checking here first with all you wise people !!
Only other time income has gone through on her NI number is from another wee casual weeks work in the summer where she earned about 30 pounds but they do everything through books etc...... just scared this is being classed as a 2nd job !!
THANKS ALL

A good start would be get her to complete a new starter declaration with this new employer and if she can sign to say it's her only/main job she should at least be put on the emergency tax code and be able to earn about £200/week from then on before paying tax.
Not sure how long it'll take to get the tax already taken back0 -

It may be too late to do the New Starter process as she is already being paid, the simplest option may well be to ring HMRC and tell them that she is working, providing the employee's PAYE reference if possible (it should be on a payslip if she has one) and they will then allocate the correct tax code and send it to the employer. Once that has been done she will get back the tax that's been deducted up to that point, so she will have one bumper pay week!0

Has she signed up to her online personal tax account?0

She is on a emergency tax code, and it is taken off at the basic rate. Tell you DD to contact her employer to get a tax code.0

tell DD to go back to her employer and establish what, if any, answer DD gave to her new employer when the new employer completed the starter checklist as BR is normally a code which the employer must use if they have no other info to go on and DD and the employer got confused over her "other" job
as a 17 year old DD should be perfectly capable of reading and understanding the following webpage, so she can learn what to do herself
