When do I need to file my tax return?

Options
I really don't know much, if anything, about tax. I registered as self-employed in October. I've looked online and I see that the deadline to file your tax returns is in January but that says for the tax year April 2015-April 2016. So, when would I need to file my tax return as I only registered as self employed in October this year? Also, probably a very dumb question, when you file your tax return, do you include the tax payment? Sorry. I'm clueless!

Comments

  • When you registered is irrelevant, it's when your business started which matters.

If that was October 2016 (and you have no need to complete a tax return for any other reason) then you will need to submit your first return by 31:01:2018.

Any tax/nic/student loan would be payable then as well and you may also have to make a payment on account towards your 2017:18 tax bill at the same time although whether this is required or not is only known once you have filed your 2016:17 return.
