NI question on job applications

After 5 years in 1 job I am now applying again. I have got two applications and they both ask for a Nat Ins number. To my mind it is too early to do that, but would be happy to give at interview stage should I be so Kylie (Lucky, lucky, lucky).
But is this a common question now on app forms and am I over worrying about private data?

Yes, I have seen it on pretty much all the application form I've seen over the last couple of years, I believe it has something to do with showing you are eligible to work in the UK before they take your application any further.0

Whilst it is common I, like bribri, think the question is asked too soon in the recruitment process, especially as NI numbers can be linked to identity theft. A simple question of, "are you eligble to work in the UK" should be enough.
IMO an employer needs the NI number, a potential employer does not. It's hard to see what they can really do with it at the time of the application - though a few decades ago it was the basis for some "black lists" which could be accessed by subscribing employers in a certain industry.0 -
An NINO is not evidence of identity - but I know what your saying.
However, just as valuable to a thief is your full name, DoB, address, phone number, qualifications, CV, present employer/earnings, passport photo? AND signature - all things you have put on the application form!. All the things needed to start a 'new' identity.0
