Bad credit check advice

Hi,

I am trying to get a mortgage with my partner. We went in to get it all signed up but the credit check came back as a NO!.

On further analysis it was due to an unknown outstanding bill with EE. It was after my partner finished her contract early. They had an £80 buy out but she did not know or have any correspondence.

Obviously we have paid it now but is there anything we can do to get things moving. We haven't missed any payments on our mortgage or bills so in my mind it is a common sense thing but I know that process takes higher priority than common sense these days.

Any advice or prior experience would be very useful right now as I am freaking out somewhat over this.

Thank you in advance.

  • Is it possible to 'freak out somewhat'? It's a little like 'slightly blown to smithereens'.

You should engage a broker, so that your application is placed where it will stand the greatest chance of success. Are you going down a DIY route?
  • Ah you're right, I'm just freaking out full stop!

Okay so a broker may be able to help out with this then so it is still possible?

I was initially looking on my own via price comparison (like the one on MSE).

IT all comes down to the details, was it a default? If so when was it registered?
How much is your deposit (as a percentage of the purchase price?).

I do not necessarily need the answers but those are the important bits.

A broker should be able to guide you in the right direction.

When applying for mortgage lending it is what you don't know that hurts you.

You would probably not have considered checking your credit files, nor known how to read them, or how the data contained could affect your mortgage application.

A broker would have managed all this for you.

If this is the only blemish on the credit files you will be pleased to hear that there are Lenders that will ignore issues from mobile phone contracts.

  • Thanks all for the responses. I have a perfect rating and the only blemish on the partners is this unknown bill. So that is good news. The broker sounds like the way to go and so I have started proceedings with one recommended to me by a friend.

One last question. Now we have rectified the issue, how long will it stay on her credit rating?

  • If you email their CEO you will get it removed. Explain the details and that you thought this was all closed - they will remove it.
