Self Assessment / PAYE Mix Up

Options
Hi all,

Just come home to quite a concerning letter from HMRC saying that under their self-assessment I owe almost £4.5k additional tax for the 15/16 tax year....despite being on PAYE via my employer!

My daughter was born in August 16, and when I claimed child benefit I believe I was enrolled on self-assessment. I received a self-assessment form for the last tax year in October, which I filled out believing it was just a formality....

I think their decision is incorrect - it fails to take into account pre-tax benefits, and I also have P60s to support everything.

Has anybody else had this issue? I plan to phone them tomorrow to take myself off self-assessment, but any tips appreciated!

  • Sit down, take a deep breath and get your facts straight before phoning anyone and getting more confused than you already are.

HMRC don't do their own self assessment, have you filed a self assessment return for 2015:16, if not what have you actually received?

Being on paye does not mean your tax will always be correct

Any bill from your self own assessment would be based on what you entered, have you made a mistake on the return?

What does a child born in 2016:17 have to do with the tax for 2015:16?

What exactly do you mean by "pre tax benefits"?

With regard to CB, are you or your husband higher rate tax payers?

You have never been asked to complete a tax return before but a request to self assess for 2015-16 was triggered by the CB claim?
