there is one problem with this suggestion, the Drivers get paid from their home until they leave the yard yard fully loaded within 8 hours, if they load in the morning they do not get paid until they leave the yard fully loaded thus doing it in their own time which obviously they are reluctant to do.

in effect they would lose on travel and loading time.

Good suggestion though, I asked the same thing.

So change it that they get paid from when they arrive at the yard to when they get back to home after their route (within 8 hours). That bit is not insurmountable with management goodwill - but does need that goodwill!
But a banker, engaged at enormous expense,
Had the whole of their cash in his care.

  • Is there a Union that could deal with these issues that are not affiliated with the Labour party?
My friend would definitely consider joining.

You just need to let the .Union know that you don't want to pay into any political contributions so you will get a reduced rate. It's not reduced by much, something like 50p a month less for a full-time employee.

It is not up to me to change it and I don't think it is that companies policy to pay for travel home.

  • No, they must follow the route system and must not deviate, they have to start at whatever time and arrive at the yard for the time stated. (usually several at the same time)

Like I said this has been poorly planned, no one has even thought about the bottleneck at the yard
So why would the company object to a solution that made their business more efficient but cost them nothing and helped reduce the working hours of their obviously disgruntled drivers.

It sounds like you don't think they will listen - but then they can't if no one suggests anything.

I can imagine some drivers might like to get up early anyway and then collect the kids from school (or whatever) and others maybe prefer a later start and easy journey home after the rush hour ...
I am just thinking out loud - nothing I say should be relied upon!
I do however reserve the right to be correct by accident.

Why indeed, all suggestions fell on deaf ears because the people who make the decisions are buffered by layers upon layers of middle management and it seems like a case of chinese wispers. I can't remember if I mentioned this in the OP but there is no planned downtime either, my friend has asked for an explanation and has been fobbed off time and time again.
basically he gets a schedule for 7.25 hours and 0.75 loading hours loading time, No break allocated what so ever.

It does not matter what the driver "prefers" it has been done on a "like it or lump it you know where the door is if you don't like it" basis.

They should become unionised, these would be good issues to organise around.

No point in joining a union when there is already an issue. All the union will do is take their money and then refuse to help because they weren't members when the dispute started.

So between then and now, they are now unionised?

No, as TELLIT stated above there is little point. Besides there seems to be a real reluctance to fund the Labour party among these British workers.

So these "British workers" are too ignorant to help themselves?
  • If their contact states an annual salary, their wages are always discussed in terms of an annual salary and they are paid above NMW even with an extra hour a day, then this is not illegal.

Of course the fact that something is not illegal doesn't mean it is right. As your "British workers" vote for governments that make the laws, and appear to be voting for governments that deliberately make those laws to ensure that companies can exploit people like them legally, then they have only themselves to blame. Every time they spend another hour in work unpaid they should pat each other on the backs and congratulate themselves for winning the last election. Why on earth are they complaining about something they voted for?
