***I am not a proffesional please if you are unsure of anything do some research or ask questions***
Not many people know that since June 07 tax laws were changed regarding the use of Vegetable oil as fuel (diesel cars only).
If your useage is 2500 litres or under you do not need to pay tax, 2500 litres a yr on a car averaging 40mpg will give you 22000 miles on pure Veg oil, 44000miles mixed with 50% diesel and so on...
Right I'm no expert but I know a few things, but if your unsure just search "Vegetable oil as fuel" on any search engine and you will see loads of info.
The easiest way to start saving is mix 70/30 diesel/vegetable oil, now as long as you have a '98 car or older it should be perfectly fine on this, you'll need to seek some provesional advice or do a bit more looking around on newer cars.
You can get Veg oil at approx 50p per lt from a cash and carry, if you have a 40lt tank in your car go for 10 lts oil 30 lts diesel...see how it goes, then maybe go up to 15 oil 25 diesel etc...
You can also get your car converted for around £350+ to run and pure veg oil. I will be converting my own and will then be able to enjoy 50p a litre fuel..diesel was 50p a litre in the mid 90's
With winter coming I wouldn't go more than 50/50 due to the viscosity(sp?) of cooking oil. even if you stick a litre in your saving 50p a tank
I hope this will help some of you save some money and be kinder to the enviorment. It also runs quieter and smoother.
I don't know if this post is in the wrong section or not allowed but i'm sure i'll be told
Regards
Phil

I agree with you about the savings, it is cheaper and smell like a burger van. ...mmmm
I have a 60/40 Diesel/Morrison veg and my 2002 Rover 45 diesel can run with no problems.
Regarding saving the environment:
A) Global warming due to us people is a bit of a swindle.read here http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/science/article2507851.ece
Five exclamation marks the sure sign of an insane mind!!!!!

@avantra: yes, 1st gen biofuels may not be that good for the environment, they are being seized upon by governments because they are politically easy (i.e. we can continue as life usual, everyone's happy...). Newer (cellulosic) fuels may be with us soon, maybe not, but would work better.
As to global warming being a swindle, it would be interesting to know where you're getting your facts from... If it's channel 4, you may want to read http://climatedenial.org/2007/03/09/the-great-channel-four-swindle/ for starters, then look at http://environment.newscientist.com/channel/earth/climate-change/dn9903 for some actual science. Veg oil is the way forward! I have a '96 diesel Fiesta, and am currently running it on about 40% vegetable oil. The car makes less noise, produces less smoke when starting the ignition, seemingly does more miles per gallon and, above all, runs a lot more smoothly. On this ratio, I end up saving at least £15 per tank. My mechanic has checked the car out, and was the one who actually advised me to increase the veg/diesel ratio!0

I have a 1998 Peugeot 306 1.9 diesel (52k miles on the clock), could I benefit from veg oil?
If so, what brand is best?
I hope I can do this as my fuel costs are astronomical at present.
Will mpg be a factor?0 -
Really? I had heard about bio-fuels, but I thought you had to convert your engine to use them. If I'm reading these posts right, I can fill my tank 70% and then stick veg oil in to fill (I have a '98 LDV Convoy minibus). Just common old veg oil from the supermarket?
I don't know if I would be brave enough to......0 -
I'm no expert on this subject, but surely if everyone (who could) did this then the price of veg oil would rocket.
It's supply and demand. If we go from using a litre per month to fry our bacon to adding 10 litres to our fuel tank, then there just wouldn't be enough of the stuff to go round.
We all know what happens when there is a shortage of something, those who are willing to pay the most get what there is.0 -
IVE RECENTLY ADDED A SMALL AMOUNT OF SUNFLOWER OIL (ABOUT A CUP FULL) TO ABOUT £5 WORTH OF DIESEL AND IT SEEMS TO WORK FINE , I HOWEVER HAVE A FEW QUERIES . I AM ADDING FRESH OIL WHICH COSTS ABOUT 80P PER LITRE AND ITS THE CHEAPEST I CAN FIND , I USE ABOUT 10 LITRES OF DIESEL A WEEK AND IF I REPLACE 3 LITRES OF THIS A WEEK THIS IS ONLY SAVING ME ABOUT 60P AS DIESEL IS NOW ABOUT A POUND A LITRE. , THIS WORKS OUT AT ABOUT £31 A YEAR , IS IT WORTH IT , PLEASE FORWARD COMMENTS , ALSO USED OIL IS NOT READILLY AVA TO ME SO THIS IS NOT AN OPTION , THANKS . PS i RUN A 2.OLT RENAULT ESPACE TURBO DIESEL , IS THIS OK TO RUN ON A MIX?0

Yes its a really great idea to put some vegetable oil in your diesel fuel tank.
Wait till we get a really hard frost.....and laugh at all the plonkers with solidified vegetable oil in their fuel tanks and pipe work............0 -
Only an idiot would use it without reading up on it first, and with the milder winters we are having (thanks to global warming) the chances of veg oil freezing is slimmer... call me a plonker!Yes its a really great idea to put some vegetable oil in your diesel fuel tank.

Everyone using veg oil in there cars who hasnt researched it STOP!!!!!!! You might destroy your car. Some diesel cars work perfectly fine on straight vegetable oil (SVO) with out modification, others wont.
Do your research.
Nearly all diesels can be made to run on SVO but in some cases its not worth the hassle. In those case its is possible to turn to biodiesel. But if you want to use vegetable oil in your car please do some research
Mervyn 11 frozen vegetable oil with a hard frost? mmmmmm true it does get more viscous when cold but so does diesel. IN fact regualr diesel does exactly the same and freezes too thats why from generally from october winterised diesel is sold to prevent that. And it is possible to winterise your vegetable oil if you wish.
For those that want to know visit :
http://www.vegetableoildiesel.co.uk/forum/index.php
And have a read of whats there. It is a mine of useful information including a data base of vehicles that run on svo or biodiesel and what modifications are needed or not as the case maybe.
