Lost train ticket prior to travel

Options
I bought a train ticket for my son who is away at university. I forwarded it to him by post.. The train ticket has not arrived. Do you know if train companies will replace tickets as I still have the order and payment details or will I have to bite the bullet and buy another one ! Thanks

    Why not ask ?

The worst they will say it no. Id be prepared for them to say "On ya bike".

How did you send it ?

Maybe claim off Royal mail, not sure if a train ticket is on the prohibited list.

They generally don't from my experience as in theory you could have given it to someone to use and then get another so two of you can travel. They may not all be the same though, so worth a try.

I think RM only covers them if sent via Special Delivery.

Could you not have purchased it online to be sent direct to him? Cheaper, and then the TOC would have been liable if it did not arrive.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Or purchase online for collection at a ticket machine, I believe some (maybe all) TOCs allow a ticket to be collected using the reference number and any card, not necessarily the card used to pay for the ticket.

Not a chance. They'll just tell you to buy new tickets I'm afraid.
Been there, done that and it ended up being a very expensive journey :(

You can get 'any card' collection if you purchase, and go on to use, e-vouchers.;)

I think it's highly probable the TOC will ask you to purchase another fare OP.

If that's the case it's worth checking out if you can save money by splitting your son's train tickets.

I did that recently-I usually travel from East Midlands Parkway to London St. Pancras Int'l. By going from Derby to London Euston via Birmingham New Street I saved over £30 on a return.
