unpaid tuition fees

Options
So I've found out I have a CCJ from unpaid university tuition fees! after a lot of phoning around it would seem my mother didn't fill in the necessary paperwork for my first year (though she repeatedly told me she had :/) so Student finance didn't pay the university, now I'm in debt! I completed my course hence why I didn't know, I was at the university for 2 years when they were apparently 'chasing' me for the money! and they let me enrol and graduate though that is not allowed if you owe them fees or even a library fine!

I don't know what to do/who to speak to?? it would seem my mother (therefore me!) is to blame. Do you think I could get Student finance to back pay it? its from 2012! Do I speak to the university? The CCJ is from 2 years ago :/

TIA

    Hi,

Not my area of expertise, I guess it depends what you are trying to achieve here, is it the money you owe or the CCJ that bothers you most ?

With regard to the former, Contact whoever took out the CCJ against you, and see if an arrangement is possible.

Unfortunately paying the CCJ won't result in its removal, so you are stuck with that for 6 years now.

    Hi Kayko,

It is a very difficult situation. The CCJ has been taken out because there is moneys owed to the university which, unfortunately, you will be liable for as the student who undertook the course. You could try speaking to student financing about potentially back dating the money, and see what they say. My concern would be that even if they gave you this money now (which would be unlikely) the university was still unpaid for a period of time - so the judgement is correct.

I am afraid it is unlikely you will be able to get the judgement removed, it would appear to be a case of either trying to pay this in full (if possible) to prevent enforcement action or applying to the court to vary the judgement to pay instalments that you can afford. We have a factsheet about this which you can view here.
