in Cutting tax
Hi all.
My wife has been sent a letter from hmrc asking for £1200 for underpaid tax from employment she had in 2013 2014 tax year.
She knew nothing of this til the letter and when she rang hmrc they said that the employers had put her on the wrong code and not paid enough tax.
After a bit of research on google i understand that the employer is liable for this or are we?
Thanks not sure if its in the right section.

It is always the tax payers responsibility to ensure they are paying the correct tax. The tax liability is solely down to your wife I'm afraid.0

Details of the circumstances when the employer rather than the employee are considered liable for the underpayment are here....

This is why I have been advocating for years that this sort of thing should be taught in schools, along with bank charges, money management etc, etc etc.......
I would love to know where the OP saw that the employer was responsible.....make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -

Really need to know the exact details. Everything to do with tax is down to precise detail. We just don't know what happened, and therefore, we don't know whether the taxpayer has any chance of escaping this tax.
What tax code did the employer use? What dates?
What tax code notice did HMRC issue? What date(s)?
Did the employee hand in a valid P45? If not, did they hand in a P46 and what did they declare on it as regards other jobs/income etc?
With the detail, there may be some scope for asking for relief.0
