Is it normal to pay for trainee to cut your hair?

Hi.
Thanks for the replies everyone - thought I would come back and update. Turns out the trainee hadn't been cutting hair for long at all and was very nervous bless her. She needed to keep checking things with the proper stylists so I was in there a while but had a nice chat to her while she was doing it and overall enjoyed the experience. The cut is fine - probably not quite as good as my usual hairdresser but at 20 quid and feeling like I've helped out someone training I'm happy. She's finding it difficult to build up her experience because no-one really wants a trainee to cut their hair so I said I'll ring up when I need it doing again and see if she's still looking for models then.0 -
Our local FE college has a hairdressing department, which serves both students , staff and members of the public, but there is a charge.
They used to ask the local grammar school sixth-formers to volunteer, but that was many years ago and nowadays they could get fellow students to volunteer.
My hairdresser charges £35 for a cut, foils and blow dry. She just works with one other and was recommended to me, a few years ago, after I had a string of more expensive , unsatisfactory results.0 -
obviously there is no law and its down to the individual company based on their business model. it could be the trainee is a final year and/or self employed.
some of the larger chains will be free as the trainee pays!"enough is a feast"...old Buddist proverb0 -

Yes they can charge, it depends where you go. It could be for many reasons- rental fees, product fees, if say it's a professional and they are just taking up more training so have halved their fees but are otherwise experienced, if they want to make sure there are no no-shows, there are no rules on this, it's their choice, you don't have to accept it if you don't want to. It's your choice.0

I had my hair done by a trainee once. I was 18, had it peroxide bleached (we're all 18 once) and when I went in, they offered the main guy who was £40 or the trainee who was about £15. No issues for me. The main guy came over a few times to check up on the trainee and offer some help with a couple of darker strands that the bleach was struggling to lighter. Was all fine.
