New car advice...

  • Nothing wrong with a small French car such as Citroen or Peugeot. Have always driven small French cars, they are cheaper to buy and parts are an awful lot cheaper too. I do have to agree that Jap cars are very reliable, but don't see much advantage in stretching to a German car such as VW unless your not going to keep if very long, it which case it will hold a bit more money than the French makes.
  • Well I am thinking of getting a Ford Focus 1.6 e.g. Zetec or LX.

Here is my next dilemma which some may be able to advise on.

    1. Buy from a dealer, 2 year old say for £7000. Put down a £500 deposit. Interest is 4.9% flat rate so that is roughly £320 a year interest on £6500 so if paid over 4 years total paid back (interest + deposit + amount borrowed) = £8280

    2. Buy the same spec car from an auction (ex-motability or ex-leasehold). Car sells for £5500. Get £5000 loan from moneyback at 9.9% apr over 4 years. The total cost over 4 years (deposit + interest + amount borrowed) = £6,530.

    Are my calculations correct?

Anyone have any experience in buying an ex-motability car from an auction? Still comes with manufacturers warranty and has full service history.

    Thanks for an comments.

No experience of motabilty cars except that 'motability' sourced cars seems to be the preferred choice of many taxi drivers ... so make sure the mileage is valid

Buying at auction will be cheaper. Be careful the car hasn't suffered accident damage and been repaired.

The warranty will not cover this eventuality.

Check the bodywork carefully before purchasing
  • If you are going for a peugeot stay away from a model with a lot of electrics as they are notoriously unreliable - They bought back my People Carrier after a long hard battle of will and many visits to the garage. I am now in a Toyota which has given no problems at all.
