We can tell who the tight gits are on here. Miserable tight people that want to cancel Christmas.

That's unfair and cruel, maybe some are just people like myself who cannot afford to buy their children and grandchildren more than a token gift. It's possible we can't even afford to visit the grandchildren and I work full time!
  • It seems to be parents with kids that mainly look forward to xmas - they make it worth it after all!!

I can understand that, but nobody forces anyone into buying gifts for everybody else, this is everyone's own choice. But those people should have the respect to just let Christmas be Christmas.
  • I cannot stand the worsening (every year) hype surrounding Christmas. The TV adverts are constant - your life is not complete, your Christmas is not complete without the latest must have crap (the perfume ads are the worst) and you must buy all this food! The shops push Christmas like crazy and earlier every year, the radio continously blasts the same horrendous Christmas songs ..... I hate it!!! It's all about commercialism, it's all about big companies making bigger profits. I've been spending a lot of time in Europe and it's SO different here. Much quieter, very few Christmas adverts on TV, no stuff in the shops, it's all a quiet affair - it's all about families getting together - which is what it should be. Take a step back, don't get drawn in by the UK hype. My family - myself, husband and 4 adult children don't buy presents for relatives outside of our immediate family, we do a secret santa for the 6 of us with a £20 limit. We don't send Chrismtas cards and we don't buy an over rated, over priced turkey - we have chicken with all the bits and pieces and a nice bottle of wine. Much easier, less stressed and less expense and we still have a good day.

I always feel a bit sad at Christmas. It's really for families and some of us don't have any :(

I have a partner of 20 years and between us we have no children or grandchildren, no parents, he is an only child, I have 2 long estranged brothers, one has no children.

When I see many people moaning about the cost of Christmas I feel a bit sad as it shouldn't be about the money.

Our Christmas is cheap, 2 of us and the cat don't cost much, we are lucky to have a freezer full of food and will enjoy ourselves without presents. We have advent calendars instead, mine is one of the beauty ones where it's great fun to have a treat every day (some of them are very expensive brands, yesterdays was a full sized hand cream retailing at over £20:D) and his is a very high end luxury brand full of exquisite hand made chocolates.

So no, I wouldn't cancel Christmas because in spite of the commercialism it brings a great deal of happiness to a lot of people.

As others have said the poll has got it wrong, there is a huge area between "bah humbug! Let's cancel it" and "bring it on"

I give to the local church food parcels each Christmas. I offered home made puddings this year but they preferred properly wrapped commercial :(
  • I don't really get this poll.I like the subject 'Cancel Christmas' , (a subject after my own heart) and was quite eager to vote and would of enjoyed studying the results of the poll but there are no categories for married people with children, married people without children, divorced with or without children etc etc.It is only categories mainly of people who are single etc etc who are more likely to vote for cancelling Christmas so therefore seems to serve no purpose. There is a category for grandparents as well so we can see the contrast there but why no category for families.I would enjoy finding out people's views on this across the board
  • On looking again I can see there is a category for 'Mum/grandma with school age or younger kids' but why lump 'Mum' and 'Grandma' in together in the same category? Why no category for a man with school age or younger kids? Why no category for people with teenagers?(for example) Whats the point of a poll without all of the categories of people so you can compare?
