    Yes they are because MP3s use compression to reduce the file size which results in a loss of sound quality.

    I would also add that the compression level can vary. In the old days it was common to see MP3s at 128kbps but most tend to be around 320 these days. At the latter bitrate you will struggle to notice much difference. Of course some will claim it makes all the difference and I bow to their superior hearing. Probably the same types who think gold plated cables make a difference ;)
  • Bit rate is only one factor in determing the quality of the audio output.

    But trust me, if you have a good enough hifi system and headphones, you will hear things on a cd that you never even picked up through the mp3 on your computer or phone.
