How do I prevent the little bits of nail/skin which make you cringe on fingernails?

I have one or two myself at the moment and with me it would probably be a vitamin C problem so I am off to try a supplement first.
Hmm I eat loads of fruit so I doubt it is a vitaminc problem for me. I do get really dry skin though on my hands so maybe the moisture thing is the more likely culprit in my case.0
