Bank account for a bankrupt

Ive tried a few banks and been turned down - all i have is a post office account which i cannot pay cheques into. Anyone know of a basic account i can apply for on the internet? There is no Co-Op bank here or nationwide.

  • You don't have to apply for the Co-op one in person - you can do it by post or by telephone, & the Electron card that comes with the account means you can use most ATMs & pay money in via the post office. I've had my Co-op account since early April, & though I applied in person I haven't been in there since then, so you may well be able to manage without a branch local to you. Make sure you tell them that you're BR, otherwise your application will go through the usual credit scoring & will probably be turned down - if the question isn't asked on the postal application form, make sure you write your BR status on it and specify that you just want the Cashminder account.

The other account for BRs is one with Barclays - you can find more info in the sticky here. It doesn't have internet banking, & I don't know whether you can apply by phone, but it's worth ringing them during office hours to check or having a look at their website.

I am sure that with both Nationwide and Co-op you can pay cheques into your account by post. Ask them - I think that they give you a wadge of pre-paid envelopes and paying-in slips.
